Casa Pernice Liguria / Italy

Casa Pernice

As always, geography takes center stage. The new Casa Pernice is perched breathtakingly above a Ligurian bay known to locals as the Gulf of Tigullio. The deep blue of the sea, paired with the salty breeze and the soothing sound of waves, embodies the essence of this house.

Not far from Cavi train station and just west of the charming town of Sestri Levante, Casa Pernice stands proud. We are greeted by Giorgia and Davide, familiar faces from Lake Como, where they once ran a beautiful B&B. When their landlord decided to go in a different direction, they had to find a new home for their dreams.

Now, they have.

But this is no ordinary B&B – that much can be said. With just three rooms, it’s open year-round, offering something magical in every season. Spring brings blooming roses and fragrant air; in summer, it’s a peaceful retreat from the chaos of the beaches, where cicadas hum and fireflies light up the garden at night. Autumn offers mild weather perfect for swimming even in November, and for harvesting olives from ancient trees. In winter, Casa Pernice becomes a cozy refuge with a crackling fireplace, fresh-picked oranges, and the comforting scent of freshly baked cinnamon rolls in the air.

Casa Pernice is not a hotel. It’s a home where Giorgia (the one in the white sweater vest) and Davide warmly welcome guests, cook for them, and ensure they feel at ease. It’s also a delightful potpourri of vintage furniture and eclectic treasures.

The Idea

Sustainability is at the heart of Casa Pernice. Every detail reflects this philosophy, from the eco-friendly paint on the walls to the handmade soaps, from the cotton and linen bedding to their commitment to recycling, reusing, and composting. When it comes to food, the ingredients are either grown in their own garden or sourced from local farmers and suppliers who share their values.

The House

The soul of the house is the long table on the terrace. It’s a place to relax with a book, get some work done, enjoy a glass of wine with friends, or simply share stories. On sunny mornings, Giorgia and Davide serve breakfast here—a true feast, thoughtfully prepared and full of flavor.

We like

The kitchen is a charming treasure chest of vintage finds, featuring a beautifully functional “La Cornue” stove in rich Bordeaux tones, a plate rack, stacks of cookbooks, and a historic wood-burning oven. A hidden door leads to the only room on the ground floor—a cozy little retreat for two. It features two quirky single beds arranged in a corridor-like layout but still offers a lovely sea view.

The atmosphere feels reminiscent of being inside a boat. The other rooms are equally enchanting, with some offering stunning views of the bay. In the bathrooms, you’ll find elegant fixtures from the Gio Ponti collection by Mamoli. At the far end of the garden is the red room, affectionately called “Lato Sestri.” This room also has a magical view and a charming little terrace, perfect for enjoying breakfast in the morning light.

The room with the two single beds on the first floor is sort of the opposite of a classic Hilton deluxe room.

The Style

The style is eclectic, colorful, and delightfully unconventional—a mix of kids’ playroom and art suite. As Davide puts it, “Each room is always evolving. We want Casa Pernice to change just as we change.” This place is full of surprises! Every room is like a journey through different eras.

A completely unique take on Italian style. (At least, we’ve never seen anything like it – and we’ve seen a lot of hotels).

The food

Don’t expect the typical touristy Italian dishes here. At Casa Pernice, the cooking is simple and intentional, honoring the traditions of the region Giorgia and Davide have chosen to call home. Just like at Lake Como, shared meals are a central part of the experience.

A typical spring menu? Fresh fava beans with Caciotta cheese, pea and mint velouté, herb omelet, spaghetti with agretti, grilled asparagus, and for dessert, strawberry and rhubarb cake. Giorgia takes care of the baking and desserts, while Davide handles the savory dishes. Once a week, there’s a pizza night, and on Sundays, in true Italian fashion, they serve a roast or brunch.

Meal plans are usually discussed before arrival, so guests can decide when they’d like to dine at Casa Pernice.

Activities

Casa Pernice can organize excursions upon request, offering a variety of unique experiences. These include celebrating St. John’s Night on June 24 by gathering wildflowers, enjoying Ferragosto in August, yoga retreats, an olive harvest week with a visit to the olive press, chestnut and mushroom foraging, horseback riding, walks along sandy beaches or forest trails, and visits to nearby wineries. Boat trips to the Abbey of San Fruttuoso are also available—and highly recommended.

Surroundings

The beach is just an eight-minute walk away, along a charming path lined with colorful houses. Nearby, the small fishing village of Cavi is worth a visit, with its four quaint restaurants, each offering a different, authentically old-school Italian vibe. Chiavari, with its traditional markets, also deserves a stop. This is Liguria unplugged—an authentic and unforgettable experience.

Even Portofino is only a 50-minute drive away, though the question is whether you really want to visit this upscale hotspot during the height of summer or instead savor the “real” Italy in Sestri Levante or Levanto.

Kids

Are more than welcome! In that case, it’s a great idea to book the two suites on the first floor.

Prices

Two rooms upstairs (perfect for a couple with two children, for example) cost €300 per night, including breakfast. For four adults, the price is €350 per night (€87.50 per person). The room with two single beds is €250 per night. Lunch and dinner are available upon request and come at an additional cost.
