It’s no secret that we’re fans of a so-called old-school quality. And Hotel Zur Wiener Staatsoper is a prime example of preserving traditional hotel concepts – something that has been somewhat lost in the “hip” next-gen hotel trends. A warm welcome from a well-dressed concierge can sometimes be far more meaningful than a check-in terminal with a code. After all, didn’t hotels always offer travelers a sense of security and comfort in an unfamiliar place?
The hotel
Our first impression: Grand. You step into a Gründerzeit building from 1896, located in Vienna’s 1st district. Just 300 meters from the famous State Opera, yet tucked away in a quiet side street.
What stands out about this hotel is the absence of “modern” hipness. No bicycles hanging over the reception desks – here, you’ll find artwork instead. Beneath a glass dome, freshly baked cookies await. The concierge wears a classic suit, and the hotel director greets guests warmly.
The new owner has transformed the hotel, once home to 22 rooms, into an intimate boutique hotel with 12 suites and a penthouse. The highlight? Every room is a suite in neo-Baroque style, with Paisley-patterned walls, herringbone parquet floors, and modern, impeccably stylish bathrooms. In New York for instance, only The Lowell Hotel can compare. A refuge of warm colors, tastefully designed by British designer Nina Campbell.
Breakfast
In the morning, international guests gather in the charming, jewel-box-like breakfast room. What we loved: no buffet here, but instead a beautifully arranged frech style etagère with everything your morning heart desires. Paired with a perfect Wiener Melange, the day is off to a great start.
Location
One of the highlights of the hotel is undoubtedly its location. Not only are the Staatsoper and the iconic Hotel Sacher practically at your doorstep, but so are the charming shops and bars of Vienna’s historic city center.
Just around the corner: Knize, one of the most traditional master tailors. Or the legendary Loos Bar, an intimate hang-out since generations. Or the iconic restaurant Zum Schwarzen Kameel, an absolute must on any visit to Vienna. We also recommend a walk to the beloved Café Prückel and enjoying a concert at the world-famous Wiener Musikverein.
Everything is just a short, easy walk away.
