Massarelos House Porto / Portugal

Massarelos House

We’ll admit it – we’re big fans of Baixa House in Lisbon. And we also love the Casas del Naval holiday homes in the Sierra de Gredos mountains in Spain. Now, the owner of both places, Jesús Moraime, has completed his next project: Massarelos House. It’s a collection of 15 stylish apartments for two to six people, set in a beautifully restored historic townhouse in Porto.

And what can we say? Massarelos House is another gem that we can wholeheartedly recommend – especially for families wanting to explore this truly fantastic city. It’s also a great option for freelancers or remote workers looking for a longer-term stay with plenty of room to settle in and get things done. Because if there’s one thing that sets these apartments apart, it’s the generous space they offer.

Massarelos House is not located right in the city center, but down by the Douro River (not far from the iconic Dom Luís I Bridge).

Another special feature of these beautifully and authentically furnished apartments is the way they connect guests with the city’s rich art and culture.

Throughout Massarelos House, you’ll find artworks and, most notably, curated collections by renowned ceramic artists. Ceramics have a long-standing tradition in Porto and the neighboring city of Gaia. More than 130 pieces from 11 different factories are displayed across the entire building. They tell stories about the city and its craftsmanship, giving guests a sense of Porto’s deep-rooted history during their stay.

“We collect art because we’re fascinated by the world, by the human story on this planet, and by the longings that are expressed through art,” says Jesús Moraime.

The rooms in the 15 apartments are bright and airy, each equipped with a kitchen, a bathroom, and a variety of antiques from the region.

The Apartments

In total, there are 15 apartments spread across three buildings, with a shared courtyard and a rooftop terrace. Sizes range from 25 to 68 square meters, so there’s something for everyone. One of the standout apartments is Miragaia II, offering 68 square meters of space and its own private terrace. Every apartment comes with a fully equipped kitchen as well as a washing machine.

The style? Authentically Portuguese, full of color, and designed with a great sense of detail. A big shout-out to interior designer Javier Cargo from Madrid, whose work we truly admire.

A breakfast basket is delivered to your apartment in the evening and fresh rolls and bread in the morning – essentials like butter and coffee are always stocked. The apartments are cleaned daily, while bed linens are changed every seven days (and with each new guest, of course).

Owner Jesùs Moraime, the beautiful garden pool and Porto in the evening.

Location

Massarelos House is located in a very quiet neighborhood. The nearest tram stop is just a 2-minute walk away, but you can also stroll into the historic city center on foot – it takes about 15 minutes.

When it comes to food, you don’t have to go far. Just around the corner, for example, is the restaurant O Caseirinho. Also nearby: The bars The Soul, Eter, and Taberna do Cais – all worth checking out.

If you’re after something truly authentic, we recommend heading down to the Douro River, where you’ll find a few simple restaurants serving classic Portuguese dishes.
